What is Vascular and Interventional Radiology?
Safe and Precise Access. Vascular and Interventional Radiology, also known as "IR," is all about safe and precise access. We can safely and precisely access a particular organ or body space to deliver a treatment or obtain a sample (also known as a biopsy) using the most minimally invasive techniques because we use imaging, such as ultrasound, CT, or fluoroscopic guidance (live x-ray), during our procedures. This is called "image guidance."
Minimally Invasive Techniques. Our use of minimally invasive techniques means that we do not make incisions. We make tiny nicks and use needles, not scalpels, to gain access to a target area of the body.
Image Guidance. We use image guidance with our minimally invasive techniques to determine a safe route and see that we are getting to our target, without hitting anything we shouldn't be. Image guidance is how we see what's going on inside a patient's body during a procedure without making any incisions.
What Our Patients Can Expect. IR procedures are often performed with sedation to make patients feel comfortable and relaxed, and general anesthesia is typically not needed. Because we use minimally invasive techniques, after a procedure, most patients end up with only a Band-Aid. Patients usually get to go home the same day as their procedure.
IR Procedures: Treatment and Biopsy. IR's precise access allows for a variety of procedures, which can be divided into two main categories: precision treatments and tumor sampling, also known as cancer biopsy.
Dr. Tamrazi's Approach. We are proud to be at the forefront of IR, and we are passionate about how IR can improve the quality of our patients' lives. Our Minimally Invasive Procedures page has general information on IR procedures. Our Precision Treatment page gives some examples of minimally invasive treatment procedures that we commonly perform on patients with various conditions, and our Comprehensive Biopsy page describes our unique, personalized approach to tumor sampling, which we also specialize in. All procedures are performed using minimally invasive image guided techniques.
